Communication Satisfaction between Physician and Nurse

Abstract
Physicians and nurses are valuable collaborator of healthcare team in patient care. But, their role and duty difference can make discrepancy in communication satisfaction. Barrett-Lennard relationship Questionnaire was evaluated in 112 physicians and 245 nurses in 19 hospitals (15 primary private clinics, 3 community hospitals, 1 university hospital). Among 5 domains (Regard, Empathic Understanding, Congruence, Unconditionality of Regard, Willingness to be known), ¡®Regard¡¯ domain scale was significantly higher (20.6¡¾12.78 vs. 10.8¡¾15.85) and ¡¯Un-conditionality of Regard¡¯ domain scale were lower in physicians compare to nurses (-7.3¡¾7.93 vs. -1.90¡¾9.07). Relationship scales were higher in primary care clinics
compare to larger hospitals. The scales increase according to age and career years. Nurses thought they are less respected by physician. Physicians and nurses should be aware their role differences and communication styles. Their mutual understanding and productive communication is essential to improve patient care outcome.
